Abstract

The smooth shooting skill is considered one of the fundamental skills in basketball, requiring the player to accurately estimate distance and direction while controlling body movements during the shot. Field observations have shown variability in the mastery of this skill among young players, despite similarities in training programs, indicating the influence of cognitive factors on motor performance, particularly spatial perception. The importance of this study stems from the role of spatial perception in enhancing skill performance, as it enables the player to regulate body positioning and respond quickly to different game situations, thereby improving shooting accuracy and fluidity.

The study aims to investigate the relationship between spatial perception and smooth shooting performance among young basketball players and to determine the extent to which cognitive abilities affect skill execution, providing scientific insights to support the development of effective training and educational strategies.

To achieve these objectives, the researcher administered a spatial perception test to a sample of young players from Nasiriyah Basketball Club, conducted in Haider Kamel Burhan Sports Hall, using standardized measurement tools. The performance of the smooth shooting skill was also evaluated through specially designed forms to record shooting accuracy and movement fluidity, ensuring that all players were assessed under consistent conditions for data validity and reliability.

The study results indicated a positive relationship between spatial perception and smooth shooting accuracy, confirming that enhancing spatial perception contributes to improving motor skill performance. Based on these findings, the study recommends incorporating spatial perception training into regular practice programs, conducting periodic assessments of these cognitive abilities, and integrating them with skill instruction to optimize overall performance and elevate the players’ competence in basketball. This research represents a significant contribution to sports science, highlighting the link between cognitive abilities and skill performance, and providing a scientific basis for designing more effective educational and training programs.
