The Effect of Neuromuscular Control Exercises on Some Offensive and Defensive Skill Variables in Foil Fencing

The present study aimed to identify the effect of neuromuscular control exercises on some offensive and defensive skill variables in foil fencing. The research problem emerged from the reliance of many educational and training programs in fencing on traditional physical and technical aspects, with limited emphasis on neuromuscular control, despite its crucial role in regulating motor performance, reaction speed, and accuracy during competitive situations.
An experimental approach with two groups (experimental and control) was employed. The research sample consisted of (42) third-year students from the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences at Al-Qadisiyah University, who were randomly assigned into two equal groups (21 students each). The experimental group followed a training program that included neuromuscular control exercises, while the control group followed the conventional training program. The program was applied over a period of six weeks, with one instructional unit per week.
Offensive and defensive skill performance was assessed using specific fencing skill tests, including: advance–defense–direct attack, advance–change of direction attack with retreat, and blade defense with counter-cut. The results revealed statistically significant differences between the pre- and post-tests in favor of the post-tests for both groups, with a clear superiority of the experimental group across all studied skill variables.
The study concluded that neuromuscular control exercises have a positive and effective impact on improving neuromuscular efficiency, reducing reaction time, and enhancing the accuracy and quality of offensive and defensive performance in foil fencing. Accordingly, the researcher recommended integrating neuromuscular control exercises into fencing training and educational programs and conducting further studies on different age groups and performance levels.
