Abstract

This study aims to examine the level of mental toughness among young fencers in relation to competitive training variables within specialized sports schools, given the essential role this psychological trait plays in enabling athletes to cope with performance pressures in a sport characterized by speed and rapid decision-making such as fencing. The research problem emerged from the noticeable variation among young fencers in emotional regulation and self-confidence during competitions, highlighting the need to understand the training factors influencing these psychological aspects. The researcher sought to develop a dedicated mental toughness scale and determine its level among players, employing the descriptive-analytical approach as the most appropriate for the nature of the study. It was hypothesized that structured competitive training in specialized schools would enhance mental toughness, whereas lower levels of it could negatively affect future competitive performance. The study was conducted on 84 young fencers in specialized fencing schools in Iraq. The findings indicated that mental toughness among these athletes was generally high, reflecting the positive impact of competitive training environments on developing psychological skills. The researcher recommended implementing training units focused on improving emotional control, concentration, and relaxation skills to strengthen young athletes’ ability to handle competitive pressure.
