This research aimed to develop a scale to measure the psychological barriers affecting adherence to weight loss programs among overweight women and to identify the most prominent of these barriers among participants in weight loss programs at fitness centers. The researcher adopted the descriptive-analytical approach as it was suitable for the nature and objectives of the study. The research population consisted of overweight women enrolled in weight loss programs at fitness centers in Baghdad. The total sample size was 160 participants, divided into a scale development sample of 75 participants and a final application sample of 85 participants. The researcher developed a scale for psychological obstacles, comprising four domains: low motivation, low self-confidence, fear of failure, and anxiety/stress. The results showed that the overall level of psychological obstacles was moderate, with low self-confidence ranking highest, followed by low motivation. Fear of failure and anxiety/stress were also found to be at a moderate level. The study recommended focusing on the psychological well-being of participants in weight loss programs and working to enhance self-confidence and motivation through guidance and support programs that contribute to increased commitment and adherence to exercise programs.
